According to the calculations of a business magazine, Luxembourg dominates the ranking of the wealthiest countries in the world with a GDP per capita of $140,694.
The business magazine Global Finance has created a ranking of the richest and poorest countries in the world. To do this, the magazine not only measured each country’s GDP (gross domestic product) but also weighted it according to the number of inhabitants and the purchasing power of each country. The distribution of wealth was also taken into account. In Switzerland and Bangladesh, for example, the same amount of money does not buy the same things.
Considering all these factors, Global Finance estimates that Luxembourg is the wealthiest country in the world, with a GDP per capita of $140,694 in purchasing power parity terms. This puts the Grand Duchy ahead of Singapore ($131,580) and Ireland ($124,596). Qatar (112,789 U.S. dollars) and Macau (85,611 U.S. dollars) complete the top 5 ahead of Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, Norway, the United States, and Brunei. The latter is in 10th place with US$74,953.
Austria, in 16th place ($64,571), is still ahead of Germany (19th place, $63,271). Other neighboring countries such as Italy (33rd place), Slovenia (36th place), the Czech Republic (38th place), Hungary (44th place), and even Slovakia (48th place) are significantly further down the ranking list.
At the other end of the ranking, Burundi is in last place with $856 per capita, behind South Sudan and the Central African Republic. The previous twelve sites are occupied exclusively by African countries.
